Story Of Speaking Truth
As a Muslim, we all know that we should always speak the truth. This can save us from a lot of trouble. Once a person came to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and said: Prophet (PBUH) I have a lot of bad habits. Which one of them should I give up first? Prophet (PBUH) said: “Just start telling the truth”. The man promised Prophet (PBUH) that he will not tell a lie from now on.
At night, the man was about to go and steal but before setting out he thought that today he made a promise to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that he will not tell a lie and if he steals and tomorrow Prophet (PBUH) asks me where I had been what shall I say? Shall I say that went out stealing? No I can’t say that, neither can I lie and if I tell the truth than everybody will start hating me and call me a thief. The man decided not to steal that night and left the bad habit of stealing.
Next day he felt like drinking alcohol. When he was about to drink, he thought “What shall I say to Prophet (PBUH) if he asks me what did I do whole day? I cannot tell a lie as I promise him and if I tell the truth everybody will hate me.” So he gave up the idea of drinking alcohol.
In this way whenever he thought of doing something bad, he remembered the promise that he made with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) of always speaking truth. In this way he left his all bad habits one by one and become a good Muslim.
